Sitting 11 miles (17 km) south of Dominical, along Coastal Highway 34 (Costanera Sur), this tropical village possesses great charm in an unspoiled, serene atmosphere. The Marino Ballena National Park is located in Uvita, just west of the main commercial center. The park features palm trees swaying in the wind, providing shady relief from the intense Pacific sun. The park is home to the famous "Whale’s Tail" reef formation, which creates the world’s third-largest sandbank. This National Park is surrounded by beautiful beaches and it's home to 85 different marine species, including the the humpback whale. Some of the activities available in the Uvita area are kayaking, snorkeling, horseback riding, waterfall and jungle hikes, beachcombing and a lot more. It may seem surreal that this environment is as uncorrupted as it is. It won't stay like this forever though, conditions will one day change and the secret of the Bahia Ballena will be out.
Uvita is a fast growing village, becoming the commercial center of the Ballena Coast. There is a lot to offer residents and tourists alike. It is a strong expat community blended in with the friendly Ticos, and the surrounding jungles! The setting with mountains in the background is very similar to Dominical. The countryside in the hills to the east affords some stunning ocean-view properties. It comes as no surprise that many foreigners now live in the hills above Punta Uvita, just as they do in Dominical.
