FISHING

Sport fishing has been key to Costa Rica’s healthy tourist industry since the 1970s, as thousands upon thousands of avid anglers have flocked to this country to take advantage of one of the world’s great billfish bites.

Although Quepos has long been the principal sport fishing destination for fishing many of the larger boats based there will often travel 35 miles south from the new Pez Vela Marina toward the incredibly rich fishing grounds off the Furuno Bank when the bite is on.

The Furuno Bank, just under 25 nautical miles south of Dominical, is one of Costa Rica’s richest and probably most unheralded sport fishing destinations. It is unique that the water depths can range from about 100 feet where the underwater ridge comes almost to the surface, to as profound as 6,000 feet.

Furuno is the perfect feeding ground for Sailfish and Marlin, which can be caught year round, although the peak season usually starts just before Christmas, and continues to Easter. Dorado (Mahi-Mahi) and Wahoo are also prime sport fishing targets. Yellowfin Tuna frequent the Furuno Bank somewhat later, and can reach sizes of up to 250lbs.

For those who relish lots of action the rich inshore fishing all along the Ballena Coast will yield several species of tasty Snapper, including Red and Cubera; Grouper; Amberjack; Mackerel; Corvina (Sea Bass); and when the tide and weather are right, Snook. Game fish enthusiasts can also fish inshore for Roosterfish; a 40lb Rooster will usually give you more fight than a 110lb Sailfish!
